Paper Route

The themes of games have certainly changed over the years.

  1. I always feel like kids these days are missing something by basically skipping over some of these early games. I’ve seen a lot of young Zelda fans who never played the classics, and I just don’t get why they’re not interested.

It’s also a really odd thing. I will never remember when I first turned on my N64. I was blown away by the amazing graphics and how cool and good everything looked. Super Mario 64 looked *amazing*. A year back, I booted up the old system and was shocked. I could see the polygons. I didn’t remember seeing any polygons, I remembered it looking mind-blowingly good. Kids today will never get that same moment of awe because they’re already used to really nice graphics.

    1. True, but someday these children will plug their headsets into a machine and be amazed that they’re in virtual reality, perhaps someday we’ll be able to feel stuff in games and interact to infinite amounts and they will feel their own moments of awe. And they will look back at our modern games and be surprised at how primitive they were, at less than 100fps, were mostly controlled by joysticks and buttons and were seen though flat non-3d screens.

    2. Im joung and when i was a kid i liked retro games, don’t generalize please.

    3. I am 12 and i really like retro games

      1. I like the classic Megaman and Mario games.

      2. the shiny sylveon who likes tea

i am twelve too and really do not care wether games are retro or not also i rellay want to play the original pokemon games like red blue and yellow

        1. the shiny sylveon who likes tea

oh i forgot this but i like sonic the heghog it is a really cool game

        2. the shiny sylveon who likes tea

i like job games. i played job simulator2 on the wii an probably still would but the disc got scratched :(

    4. I’m a little late to reply to this (Ok, really late), but I’m pretty young, and I enjoy playing older games. I’ve gone out of my way to find the originals, including the first Legend of Zelda game, Pokemon Red/Blue, and I’m hoping to buy an Atari Flashback from a store that sells them once I get the money. I’m just saying that some kids enjoy playing older games for the fun of it.

      1. That is true cause I’m one of the few as well. However it has become just that only a few out of the many enjoy the older games

    5. @tekursa, that happened to me to, except I booted up an N64 for the first time IN THE 20th CENTURY!
I always felt like it was ahead of its time, and I love retro games personally.

    6. Hi, I know I am late, but if you ever want a thrill get monster hunter game (preferably 4 ultimate or world) as on of the kids these days I fit all your descriptions and LITERALLY EVERYTHING about the game made me be in awe even the graphics, and they are not some of the best, to say the least.

      1. No, i remember using the ds wayy after it was old, and i was blown away. Jerk.

        1. ZeldaGameNerd3101

I am a serious fan of retro games like Paperboy 2, Adventure of Link, and other things like that. Poor Nano and Glitch will NEVER KNOW the sheer enjoyment of smashing your neighbor’s trash can.

  2. I don’t think the theme changed that much, just the way it is played now. We have all kind of job simulator these days: Surgeon simulator, farm simulator, truck driver simulator, train driver simulator, janitor simulator (viscera cleanup detail), etc.

    1. Then there’s Papers Please, which I saw being described as actual Job Simulator or something like that.

  3. I dunno… The Sims?

  4. Their cute little outfits… n_n

  5. In regards to the last few comics, I’m now slightly curious: exactly how old is GC? I’m not going to bus out science or cat lifespan statistics, or anything like that. However, I do know personally that in regards to human gamers, people from their mid-twenties and under would probably a) never have actually heard of _Pong_ and _Paper Boy_ and b) would never attempt to play them upon encountering them. The fact that GC is aware of these games’s existence and has experience with them would mark age around late-twenties, mid-to-early-thirties, at least. However, somehow I feel like that estimation is too high, considering he’s a… house cat.

With all that out of the way, we could just excuse the matter of age with the EXTREMELY obvious answer of “Does it matter?”, which it clearly doesn’t. But for plot reasons, I feel like having a general idea of the ages of characters, literal ages or not, could help establish characters better. Not that there are any problems with the characters, but I do feel like this irrelevant detail could be used to better define characters.

Sorry for such a long and pointless comment, but it’s like four in the morning and my brain refused to let me not think about it.

    1. Gamercat is infinite; ageless; timeless. (Or at least that’s what everyone who commented on the last one figured)

    2. Age wouldn’t really matter depending on how you were raised. The way I look at it, when I have kids, I am going to start them on the old systems first so that they have more of an appreciation for the games of today and have an understanding of where todays games are compared to back in the day

    3. The average lifespan of a cat is about 15 years, same as a dog, however, the average takes into account ALL domestic cats, and does not differentiate between outdoor cats and indoor cats (outdoor cats obviously live much, much shorter lives)

However, I have personally seen a few completely indoor cats that are over 20 years old

    4. I generally keep Gamercat’s age vague, mostly because I don’t want to get into the logistics of human years vs. animal years or how they technically should be growing older every year I draw them. But emotionally as a cartoon character he is approximately in a human’s 20’s.

Regarding his knowledge of classic tech and games, that is explained simply by the fact that he is head-over-heels for vidya and has gone back to start at the very beginning and/or explored most of what gaming has to offer in both the past and present.

      1. Personally, I just been assuming that they are like Simpsons characters, time passes by but no one ever ages

I assume that about all comic/cartoon characters until states otherwise

  6. Hahaha, let them play to E.T. the game. It would be a sweet revenge.

    1. We want to teach them values.
      Not scar them for life…

  7. Well…um…

I don’t have anything witty to say, but… SimCity?

  8. IT WOULD BE BETTER IF GAMERCAT PUT THE FIRST SUPERMARIO BROS. ON THE NES, THAT WAY GLITCH & NANO COULD PLAY A GAME THAT MAYBE THE WOULD BE FAMILIARIZED

    1. BACK IN MY DAY WE DIDN’T HAVE ENOUGH MEMORY FOR LOWERCASE LETTER GRAPHICS

    2. ROJO Y NARANJA ES UN NARANJA MÁS OSCURO.
      BUM BICH GETAUTA GÃœEY.

  9. “What’s a newspaper?”
“Uhh you know those boring TV channels that tell everyone why they should be afraid and hate each other? It was like that except fewer pictures, printed on paper, and they charged for it. People used them for pet defecation and to make arts and crafts”
“just one more question.. what’s TV?”

  10. hehehe show them Sonic 06 and they will beg to play older games

    1. No, show them Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric.

      1. That works it is newer after all

  11. NOOOOOOOOOOOO I accidentally read the next comic when I clicked the wrong website!!! D:

    1. Same here! D:,it feels like when you read a spoileer you didnt want to read! -.-“

  12. I liked Ultmia Exodus. TRUE STORY: I could not beat this game FOR YEARS! Why? Because I bought the game used from a video movie rental store – OMG I’M SO OLD! Anyway it didn’t have an instruction booklet so I was figuring it out as I went along. Cut to nearly 10 years later I was in high school and my girlfriend also had and played the game. I showed her all my maxed out characters and explained that I couldn’t pray in the circle of light and she takes the controller out of my hand and presses the “select button” I jump off the floor and scream,”There was a whole ‘nother menu!!!” I finished the game in like 5 minutes after that.
TL DR: Before the internet you had to figure out how to play games without tutorials or know somebody who knew how to play the game.

  13. What about FFVII that game is really old but its still really good.

  14. So much lol’s happening! XD

  15. Solario the Visored

I find it ironic that, the very first time we ever saw Glitch, he was playing the original Pokemon on a Gameboy and reminded Gamercat how great the classics are. :D

  16. Make the cute Calico girlie show up somewhat often at least? Maybe slightly less than Sweet but enough so she’s still prominent in the story? She’s so adorable and her and Gamer look so cute next to eachother.

  17. PathOfTheAwesomePie

Ah how games have changed over the years… makes you wonder how games would be today if we have the same type of games back then…. *shiver* Oh well, back to my Final Fantasy, Skyrim, and other great games of the century!~

  18. This was my mom’s favorite game. She introduced me to it recently and then immediately kicked my butt at it.

  19. I remember playing the Nintendo 64 version of Paperboy. I didn’t like how they cut you off on lower difficulties, but I went ahead and played through hard mode and beat the game.

  20. Paperboy is actually pretty fun
I don’t actually play the game correctly, I just like to hit people and things with news papers

  21. HA

  22. ALL YOUR PAPERS ARE BELONG TO US

  23. The Soul of Cinder

I have an NES, SNES, N64, Color GameBoy, and all the Pokemon and Zelda originals and i’m 13. Man, i’m old.

  24. Lock@Shock@Barrel

Smooth GaMERcat… kids are more into the future than anyone else

  25. Back then: Yay! I got a goal!

Today: Oh, Come on! You call this a boss battle?!
