New Site & Hiatus Update

First things first, the website now has a shiny new layout! Woo! The old theme was in serious danger of completely borking out the site at any moment, so I finally gave in and updated to a new theme. Some formatting on older posts was lost in the transition and a bunch of older images are likely broken, but all comic content should be a-okay and the site is now more mobile friendly.

It’s also the TEN YEAR anniversary of the comic! Wow!! I started Gamercat back in May/June of 2011, so this month officially marks a full decade. I can’t believe it’s been that long! Happy anniversary!

Finally, the hiatus. I’m afraid I’m not planning to return to updates for now. The long and the short of it is that because of my progressing disability I just have way less drawing time than I used to. Comics are pretty labor-intensive and I’ve already done over 300 of them over the course of about 8 years. Life is short, I want to do other things, and I can’t do both. So sadly the comic has to make way.

That being said, I have been thinking of ways I could possibly do some comics here and there. I don’t feel I can ever return to a weekly schedule, but perhaps I could do a comic or two when the mood strikes. Especially if I make it easier by reducing the number of panels or using a sketchier/looser style. I don’t want to promise anything and get hopes up, but I might try it out and see how it feels.

The Patreon will remain active because if I disable it then access to the library of wallpapers will be completely lost, but if you want to suspend your pledge it’s completely fair! I’m also still creating wallpaper for $5+ patrons, so if you dig those they’re still going. Otherwise, feel free to visit my shop if you want to support my more active endeavors.

I also want to say another big thank you to everybody who still reads the comic, still visits now and then, and who leaves kind words. It really is appreciated. Thank you.

And please remember that I’m not completely inactive as a creator! I still draw and still make cute merchandise and still have various projects going. You can find me most active over on Twitter.

  1. Just read through the archives again – the comic “candy crush” November 17 2015 doesn’t display and has the “next comic” icon missing below.

  2. First! How long do you think until you come back? It’s been roughly 2 years now.

    1. Have you not read the post?! The Comic isn’t likely to ever come back, at least not on a regular schedule:
      > I’m afraid I’m not planning to return to updates for now. […] So sadly the comic has to make way.

@Celesse: don’t feel any pressure to start again. All great things have to come to an end sooner or later. And it was a great pleasure getting to know GamerCat and his friends; they always put a smile on my face :)

  3. Happy to hear from you.
Althought I would’ve liked the comics to resume, I understand your situation.
If you plan on resuming, I would love to see a comic here and there, no pressure. Do it at you own pace, and if you fell like it.
Best regards from a long time fan.

  4. So good to hear from you! I check back on this site often to see if there are any changes. I was so pleasantly surprised to see the new look and your update! The comic is so comforting and simple to me that I often re-read through parts of it every now and again. It reminds me of my childhood when I had more time to play video games and often immersed myself in them. Thank you for being so faithful to the project for so long- it’s totally understandable that you needed to step back! Your wellbeing is what’s most important when it comes to creative endeavors. You can’t pour from an empty cup… You need to take the time to fill it, too! All this being said, I’m very excited to possibly see GaMERCaT return, even if it’s in smaller ways! You’re an amazing talent and I’m thankful to have stumbled upon this so long ago, it seems like. Happy ten years!!! 😁🎉😺🎮🕹️

    1. I’m so glad you enjoy the new look and that you come back often to read the comic :) And thank you for understanding! It really is appreciated!

  5. Take care of yourself and do what’s best for you and your health. Happy Anniversary!

  6. Gr8 to hear from u, take it easy! Btw stunning new site

  7. The new site looks spectacular. It’s great to know you haven’t forgotten about the comic, even if regular updates won’t be returning.

    1. Thank you! I definitely haven’t forgotten the comic, it still means a lot to me.

  8. Hi,
Sorry to hear you won’t be drawing regularly again. But your health and happiness come first, so do take care of yourself.
Curious question, though: Do you have plans to put out a third book? Possibly containing all comics till date? The first two books covered the first 200 comics, I believe, and a third book would cover the entire comic list. I’m looking to get the entire collection, emphasis on entire. Do give an update on your thoughts on that.

    Thanks.

    1. Hi there, thanks so much for your understanding. I do still plan to print the third book, I’ve just been having trouble doing so since overseas shipping has become astronomical the past year or two. I think I’ve located an affordable US printer though, so I’m hoping to be able to do it soon!

      1. I was just looking at my shelf and wondering if vol 3 was still going to be a thing. Of course with shipping as nutty as it still is…

    The new site is beautiful…
Also, I’m glad to see that you haven’t forgotten the comic series that put so many smiles on peoples’ faces (and that we can now prove the haters wrong, though that’s not important).
But yea, an easier upload schedule sounds great! I know it’s not guaranteed it’ll happen, but we can all understand being too busy to do something. Just do what works best for you!

    1. I’m glad you like the new site! And I definitely haven’t forgotten the comic, it still means a lot to me. My relationship with it has actually improved drastically now that I’m not forcing myself to crank out comics, so it’s easier to come back to it for updates like this. Thank you for your understanding, it’s really appreciated!

  10. I have learned over the years that it is ok for things to end. Endings are not necessarily definite! You can always come back from “retirement” whenever the mood strikes. And I think it would perhaps be a bit gentler on your psyche to gain closure instead of feeling that you’re leaving a hanging thread that will brush against your mind every so often?

    1. It’s definitely okay for things to end, and certainly okay to return to them if and when you feel like it. It’s really appreciated that you understand :)

I have mostly settled the site to be in a semi-retired state for now, and I feel a sense of closure with having made it to the 300th comic. I’m not giving up the hope that I might return in some fashion some day, but everything feels more settled now.

  11. Hi! I’m so glad to see you around! I just wanted to tell you that this is my favorite comic and it’s okay if you aren’t going to continue! 300 is an impressive amount and you left off on a great place to wrap up the series in my opinion (besides, it’s your comic, so it’s up to you!). I own the first two books and a 3ds skin from your shop! I’m really looking forward to getting the third book to complete my collection. I hope you’re doing well! ^^

  12. Hello. Congratulations on the 10th anniversary! Just at the beginning of this year I see the GaMERCaT comics. Every now and then you might do guest comics again. 😸

  13. First, thank you for the update and sorry to hear about your disability getting worse. Like everyone I’m disappointed to hear that you won’t be restarting the comics any time soon or possibly ever fully but your health is much more important so focus on that! Thank you for sharing Gamercat with us and also Strays! I’m currently reading your friend’s continuation of that world’s story, Crows, and am enjoying it very much! If Strays and Crows ever got turned into an anime it would definitely be worth watching! Good luck in your future and congratulations on the 10th Anniversary of Gamercat! Also, Navirou64’s suggestion of guest comics is one I’ll second! My favorite guest comic was by Ethan Ror – cats and boxes are ALWAYS a great mix! XD

  14. Thanks Ella! My favorite was the Nintendo Labo

  15. Even if you never come back (which is completely understandable), know that this series has left a fond memory in many hearts (mine included of course).

  16. that_kid_that_oofs

Hey Celesse! I’m glad that you were able to update the site and put out an update, and even more glad that you’re doing better. While I am a bit sad that the comic is mostly going to be updated for the most part, health comes over comic work and it’s completely understandable. Anyways, happy 10th anniversary to the start of the GaMERCaT, and hopefully I might be able to draw a lil something with another black kitty that turned ten July 1st (Monstercat :D). Anyways, stay safe and well, and keep up the amazing art-work on your socials!

    1. that_kid_that_oofs

      *not updated.
how the heck have i not caught this earlier

  17. Love the new look it’s much more clean!

  18. I had forgotten I still had this comic in my RSS reader. I supposed I might as well delete it now.

All the best in your future endeavors!

  19. Glad to hear from you. Been reading your comic for years, and still get a bit teary on certain ones (for example, Glitch’s Christmas miracle.)
Though I don’t have any strong “Your comics really helped me deal with…” story, I just wanted to say that they are still amazing, and I’ll probably reread them before long. I loved seeing your illustration style change over the years, too – it’s something I enjoy when reading long-living webcomics done by the same team.
And, like a lot of other people, as much as I would love to see more of these pages, your health and wellbeing does have to come first.
Sending my admiration all the way from chilly, locked-down Melbourne, Australia!

  20. Honestly, I LOVE the new design! I thought you forgetten the website, but this update tells the opposite. I hope you’re going very well with your life, and stay in home! Oh, and sorry if I said something wrong, I’m spanish and I don’t talk this language very well xD

  21. About a year or two ago a litter of kittens I got had a black kitty in it and I named him Gamercat so even though you aren’t returning to the comic I will still remember and love it through him.

  22. Juscat!
I speak Spanish and I don’t speak much English. I have seen all 300 comics 2 times used Google Lens!

  23. Lucario (Master of Aura)

So… what do we do now?

    1. I don’t know.

  24. Celesse, a question. How do I put a profile picture in the Comments of the page?

    1. Lucario (Master of Aura)

I think you need to create an intenseDebate account using the account you use to comment

  25. Hi there! Just showed a friend who has a cat named gamer the site and noticed that post-update, the alt text appears to be one comic off (alt text on #1 is CATsassin)

Glad you’re still doing Patreon, and glad you’re putting your health and well being 1st!

  26. I just re-read it again today….probably the 8th time now. It never gets old. The jokes are still funny every time.

    1. I totally agree! I re-read all her comics few times now (I didn’t count). And the jokes still makes me giggle :)

  27. I hope your doing well celesse, and you are my first choice for presents for my family. I love your comics, as does my friend Miriam. You have the place of top comic in my room, and you got me into illustration.

  28. It’s great to “see” you again! And so sad that I cannot read any new your brilliant comics again… But I understand. And I just put two books with GaMERCaT to basket, so I will be have wonderful gift for Xmas. Yours drawings are awesome! I will be checking your site, as usually. Greetings from Poland :)

  29. Happy anniversary

    1. Lucario (Master of Aura)

      Of what, exactly?

      1. Oh the anniversary of- WHAT DO YOU THINK?! (Not tryna be rude the comment idea just popped in my head*

  30. I just read the entire archive again and I loved it

  31. Lucario (Master of Aura)

    So… anything happening here?

  32. i will always have nostalgia for the old comics and the old layout but i’m super happy you’re back!
and the new layout is awsome

  33. João henrique brazil

hello how are you i’ve been waiting for new comics for 1 year i’m sad and tired i keep looking at the comics several times to see if a new comic appears

  34. João henrique brazil

giving up is not a good thing.
    and another thing…
    I’m taller than you

  35. João henrique brazil

I can not wait anymore!! I think I’ve already waited too long for today. I’m too upset.
    I won’t wait anymore I want a new comic.

  36. João henrique brazil

aaaaaaaaaaah I’m tired I’m really waiting too much. I can’t believe you gave up I want new comics!! what a rage rage!!!!!!

    1. Lucario (Master of Aura)

After reading your four comments, I have one question for you: Are you okay?

      1. Of course not, he’s probably brazilian and don’t know how to use the internet, or did understood that the comic is no longer being made, knowing the people from here (I’m also brazilian) he probably think that the autor is obliged to continue the comic just because he like it or he’s trolling

  37. Bongo cat (thats right hes back)

well this stinks, looks like the forever hiatus comment i read once was true

    1. Lucario (Master of Aura)

Wait do comments work again? The last few times I’ve tried over the years it didn’t

  38. Lucario (Master of Aura)

Cool, the comments appear to work again- though I’m not sure how many people visit this site every once in a while… I’m practically overdosing on copium at this point, but I’ll continue to wait, like a person waiting for Silksong (which was announced 2 months before the final comic), or a minecraft dog waiting for the save file owner to revisit the abandoned world, or me waiting for my dad to come home with the milk. I know that a beloved series like this can’t end without some sort of actual closure, without one last story, a finale instead of a standalone comic of Glitch breaking up an argument. The last Gamercat related update I can find (can’t check Twitter due to refusing to create an account) is via the Facebook, adding a photo on April 5, 2023. That’s something. I did see the Forever Hiatus message Bongo Cat referenced, hopefully the hiatus ends before all hope is lost- though people like me, checking for literal years, will hopefully prevent said hope from being lost for the rest of time. Can’t wait to see you again, Celesse and Gamercat.
