he ACCIDENTALY killed toriel. not intentianal, that and how do you one-shot her in any mode other than genocide cause if he playing genocide then that is his fault
Wrincewind
i know it’s a bit late, but… you’re told at the beginning that you can whittle monsters down to low health to make them more likely to surrender. But for Toriel, slightly below 2/3 health, her stats modify to give her an armour value of, like, minus a million – so you can accidentally kill her in one hit when you think you’ve still plenty of room to go. It’s one of the clever, weird ways the game both fucks with you and teaches you about the game and the world.
UndercoverMan
I hate how if you kill her, go back and spare her flowey acts like an ass
When I accidentally killed Toriel I cried for a whole day while doing neutral from that then I went to the true reset button, reset, named myself Frisk, and then spared Toriel even though when you are named Frisk the ENTIRE ruins are in hard mode which means it’s hard to spare goat mom but when I spared her and did pacifist it made me feel GREAT!! I think that the best character is no doubt Sans and papyrus… but the Sans X Frisk thing is out of hand… SANS AND PAPYRUS DONT HAVE A ‘ PERSONAL JOYSTICK ‘ IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN… BUT FRISK IS HUMAN AND THAT MEANS THEY CANT DATE A MINSTER ALSO FRISK IS GENDERLESS SO THEY HAVE NEITHER OF THE GENDER AREAS!!! SO STOP WITH THE F–KED UP SHIPS THAT INVOLVE FRISK!!! But I agreee Toriel’s death is tragic ?
You cannot run from consequences forever. The guilt stills lies in your mind. You killed her. Even after she did so much to protect and care for you.. you didn’t have to FIGHT.
Yeah! Like, feeling bad for killing poor Toriel, you bastard? I know your dirty secrets, im watching over you, you can’t hide from me!
And that moment when you fight here again and when you got this line about seeing a ghost.
And this is moments when i realize over and over again how awesome this game is.
thing is what the game allows you to end it by violent or pacific means, if you take violent ones… well, you kill people, if you take a peacefull one you can become friends whit some of them
You should probably animate that Spoiler Warning to make it more noticeable. Even flashing black and red or something would work. I already played so I’m good, but I read the comic and didn’t notice the spoiler warning until the comments pointed it out.
Yeah. I think it was definitely intentional, since the game kinda messes with you. Her sparing-challenge is the hardest so far, and really the hardest in a while.. plus she’s special, so it’s easy for someone to think maybe they have no choice, or their only choice is to whittle her down.. then it tricks you when you get her down far enough. It was the best way for the game to teach you about mistakes, resetting mistakes, and that they will always be remembered.
That’s why it saddens me when I saw and see the best letsplayers aggressively coaxed by their audience into playing full pacifist right away as their first blind playthrough.
Yeah it’s unfortunate, on one hand nothing beats a true blind experience in a game, but on the other hand who wants to waste hours of their life playing something less efficiently?
Kaitensatsuma
I made the same run. I kept trying to talk her down but it said “unfortunately, talking does not seem to be the option here” so I fought….its ahard fight, for your first real boss. I thought she’d give up if I got her low enough, but after flowey I was leery of Papyrus, but spared him….I felt so bad about Toriel I reset, and she says…
“You look like you’ve seen a ghost.what do you know?….no…that’s impossible”
I’m not sure how I feel about this one. This happens to pretty much everyone (reaction and all), so… does it still count as a joke in that case? It seems like it would get the most reaction out of people who haven’t played yet… and that would be spoilers for them!
I just bought the game today, and if you think about it, this part is really mind bending. Earlier in the game, a frog tells you that some characters you can spare, even when their name isn’t yellow. This just makes you think “what if I hit spare? What’s the critical strike scripted? WHY DID YOU MAKE ME DO THIS, GAME?!”
I’ve had…. limited exposure to this game. Limited in the sense that to preserve spoilers I have had to essentially hide from the internet to not have it spoiled for me until I can properly watch the game be played. The most of I’ve seen so far is what Markiplier has played. But that hasn’t stopped… well… everyone from becoming raving rabid fanboys about it… which slightly puts me off of the game. I already know I’m very anti-hype, and my interest in a thing could potentially be represented in an inverse exponential equation. I’ve seen clips where she dies, but perhaps I have no heart, but I didn’t really feel too bad. I’ve killed good characters, I’ve killed bad characters, I’ve killed characters who had nothing to do with my struggle whatsoever. So really, you kill one loving motherly character, you’ve killed em all. That and it is hard to take anything seriously, especially an emotional death scene when you’ve seen the character naked or doing dirty things all over the internet. The moment this game came out, a near-literal, unavoidable tidal wave of Toriel porn everywhere. |:/
I understand where you’re coming from, man, I too had to hide from everything Undertale for a while until I was able to experience it. Although if I may recommend without being too pushy, the Game Grumps’ series is worth a watch if you’re looking for a good playthrough.
Possibly. Game grumps are pretty fun from time to time. Not a near-constant exposure, of course, but worth a laugh every now and then. (Currently watching their A Link Between Worlds playthrough.)
That actually sums up the game pretty well. Although, I didn’t see that scene until like my fifth run (first pacifist, second failed attempt at no mercy, third pacifist, fourth no mercy turned neutral because of my inability to kill Undyne, fifth straight up Neutral, with focus on making Papyrus king of the Underground.)
Her Neutral death was probably in my top twenty most painful events in the game. Number one was a tie between Sans calling me a “dirty brother killer” and him telling me to go to hell during the ending phone call of the same run.
Honestly, I think this is the best way to go. Kill her, then realize you could have done it different, and go back to the last save and spare her. Then a “friendly” little character will show up, giving you a hint as to what level this game works on and that you should just throw what you know about games out the window.
Ya, if you want to truly reset Undertale, you need to delete the save, the game and any files hiding in AppData folder to refresh the game completely. Only a true computer cleansing can fix that mistake.
Maybe you should put the comic MUCH MORE under the spoiler tag. I came from my feed and saw the spoiler tag while also seeing the first line of the comic strip (not really read, but now I got spoilered anyway, since it’s clear what’s happening…)
Putting a spoiler tag while making impossible to avoid the spoiler is useless. Please think this better next time.
They don’t make the path to sparing her obvious the first time around. I worked through the ACTs, tried to SPARE, and the first Spare or two don’t change. They give all the signs that all the other options except FIGHT are disabled, leading me to believe that I need to do enough damage to provoke the next ‘stage’ of the fight. And then out of nowhere, you critical kill her… I think this comic captures the “WHAT?” reaction to that very well!
Once I knew about mercy I made sure to not hurt anything as best as I could. And watching my older brother play it in his free time made me quite happy. This game has earned it’s place as one of the greats. TLDR; I didn’t have it in me to hurt anybody in this game.
Yeah even the simple fact that you can kill characters but you don’t have to is kind of a spoiler, really almost any simple detail like that seems to spoil Undertale… It’s actually pretty fascinating, it’s a very well-designed game. A lot of thought went into it.
Actually, no. Get it, it is the experience of a lifetime. Just inside battles DO NOT press the FIGHT button, only the ACT for your first play-through. All the monsters you attack and/or kill (even just random encounter monsters) WILL affect the path you take. For the first time DON’T KILL ANYTHING, JUST ACT. Only use the FIGHT button on the FINAL boss. Thank you.

You can actually use ACT all the way in the game (exept this one place but nobody dies then)

Funny thing is, killing Toriel (and then resetting) is actually a way to get a much fuller game experience than just playing pacifist straight away.
